About Us

Mission

To work towards ending gender-based violence, while supporting the strengthening and proper implementation of laws that support victims and survivors of violence.

Vision

Aweksha envisions an India without any form of gender-based violence and discrimination, particularly against young girls and women.

Our Approach

Aweksha believes that gender-based violence, particularly violence against women (VAW), is systemic in nature and a major public health concern. While the understanding of VAW is usually limited to physical abuse, it can also take the form of psychological, emotional, financial, sexual and cyber violence. Additionally, socio-cultural norms focus on the sanctity of marriage and family ties, thus enabling the abuser, and continuing the cycle of violence.

Aweksha recognises that this cycle can be isolating and difficult to break due to a lack of survivor-focused support systems. In light of this, our work is centred around the idea of creating a safe space for women and individuals belonging to marginalised genders who have survived domestic violence or continue to face abuse in their daily lives. We do this through a comprehensive and conscious approach that prioritises the needs of the survivors, both financial and emotional, and provides the necessary assistance to ensure that they feel empowered to make the best choices and decisions for themselves. Our hope is that the work that we are doing will combat the prevalence of violence, strengthen the collective resistance against it as well as make larger systemic changes in society so justice is within reach for all.
